Traffic safety in planning: A multidimensional model for the zero vision. Vision Zero has had a huge impact on the work to improve road safety. Both the working methods used and the choice of interventions have been improved.

Vision Zero Conference is organised by Swedish Ministry of Enterprise and Innovation, Trafikverket (Swedish Transport Administration) and Transportstyrelsen (Swedish Transport Agency). The conference will be held at Clarion Hotel Sign in Stockholm. Vision Zero is both an attitude to life and a strategy for designing a safe road transport system. It establishes that the loss of human life in traffic is unacceptable. Road safety in the spirit of Vision Zero means that roads, streets and vehicles must be much more adapted to human capacity and tole-rance.

Historically, traffic safety work has been focused on management by rules. In order to spread information and experience on the Vision Zero approach, we have initiated a week-long international course. It is held in Sweden, in September, and has now become an annual event. Vision Zero International Course - Trafikverket Road safety work in Sweden is based on Vision Zero and is carried out in a systematic way using a management by objectives model. This model involves measuring and following up a series of current situations in the road traffic system which have a verified connection with the trend for the numbers of fatalities and severely injured on the roads. In 1997, the Swedish Parliament adopted a ‘vision zero’ goal for road traffic, with the long-term goal that no one would be killed or seriously injured within the road transport system.

People make mistakes, but we think mistakes made with in In 1997, the Swedish Parliament adopted a new long-term goal and strategy for road safety, Vision Zero. The goal is that no one should be killed or seriously injured through a road accident. Vision Zero is an ethical stance stating that it is not acceptable for human mistakes to have fatal consequences.
